Today, it is difficult to stand out due to amount of noise in the market. Becoming a leader in your particular niche, whether that is on behalf of a company or as an individual, is critical to building success and creating influence.

Building influence requires time, effort and consistency to build trust and effectively a brand. While advertising can help re-enforce that trust and even help to introduce a brand, its effect falls short without that depth.

Mike Weston, Director at SMTW sat down with Jeff Gothelf, author of “Forever Employable“. They discussed what it takes to become a leader in your chosen niche today.

A bit about Jeff first. He started his career as a designer working with the first companies to use the internet as a new communication, sales and service channel. Over his 20 year career he has worked as an information architect, design team leader, product manager, founder, trainer, coach and consultant.

Jeff previously wrote the award-winning Lean UX (O’Reilly, 2013 & 2016) and Sense & Respond (HBR Press, 2017) books with co-author Josh Seiden. His goal was to bring customer-centric, evidence-based decision making and agility back into corporate cultures. You can find out more about Jeff here.

Now a leading thought leader himself, Jeff discusses some of the key aspects from his latest book including:

  • Why building influence is so important today
  • The pre-requisites to building that influence
  • How to identify where you should focus your efforts in a self fulfilling way. He references Ikigai, a Japanese concept that means a “reason for being” as an approach to help do this successfully.
